The city of Tama is considering giving National Beef, a meatpacking plant, a short-sighted tax break because the company wants to create 800 jobs for the area. An $8.8 billion corporation ought to finance such an expansion itself, not rely on the taxpayers. Local officials already agreed to a property tax abatement back in 2014 and another will deplete the town's ability to build new infrastructure for years.

City leaders have already rejected two proposals for a new tax deal with National Beef. They should continue to stand strong in the name of fiscal prudence and do what's best for their constituents, not massive corporations.
EXPENSIVE
Tama leaders already provided a property tax break to National Beef in 2014 a new deal loses out on even more revenue.
UNFAIR
Another tax abatement may threaten the city's relationship with other companies not given that level of support.
SHORT-SIGHTED
The corresponding rise in population will require Tama to fund large projects, which is ultimately threatened by a new tax deal.
